Spiritual Development at the End of Life

Course Overview

This course is designed as an interactive, on-line course to share knowledge and useful ideas for the nurse (or other care giver) who cares for people who are near the end of their lives. It focuses on spiritual development, and incorporates practical suggestions for care. In addition to the spiritual development that continues through the last moments of life, legal, ethical and professional issues will be included. The course is based on the book, "Tuesdays with Morrie", by Mitch Albom. There are eight lessons. Each lesson consists of a discussion, and a set of resources that can be saved and used later.

NURSCE-200 (8 contact hours) is entirely web-based and can be taken online at your convenience, once you are registered for the course. The course is available through June 2006.

This course is appropriate for Parish Nurses who have taken the basic parish nurse course and non-nurses who are active in health ministry or want to know more about the topic.

Cost: $80.00

Objectives

At the end of this course:

  • Each student will develop insight into how one man, Morrie, decided to cope with death.
  • Each student completing the course will demonstrate respect for the process of dying.
  • Each student completing the course will list multiple ways to help a person at the end of life achieve a sense of peace and acceptance.
  • Each student completing the course will identify legal, ethical and comfort measures to help the person who is dying cope with transition.

Method of Learning

This course is in a interactive, web-based format and uses the Internet and other resources.

What the Course is Like

Notes are provided in Adobe format.

Learning modules are organized by using the chapters in the book. In general, one lesson covers two Tuesday meetings between Morrie and Mitch.

Journaling about issues that require thought, and for answering questions, is one technique used. Many Internet links are provided. Some attachments can be downloaded and saved for future use.

Take advantage of the learning environment -- check out the active Internet links provided in the notes!

Evaluation and Successful Completion of Course

Regular journaling, as directed in the lessons, will aid in evaluation and completion of the course. At the end of the course (after all 8 lessons are finished), the student will e-mail two examples of journal entries to the instructor. You may choose any two that you are comfortable sharing.

Students MUST complete a course evaluation at the end of the course, for nursing accreditation requirements. There is a form for this purpose at the end of the lessons, listed as a quiz. It is easily completed within minutes.

Once the journal entries and CE evaluation form is completed, the instructor will instruct the CE department to generate and mail your CE certificate for the course. Non-nurse participants will receive a certificate of completion.
