She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and her Master of Science in Psychiatric Nursing (child specialty) from the University of Cincinnati, and her Doctorate in Nursing Science from Rush University. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, an ANCC Certified Specialist in Child Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, and a graduate of the Cincinnati Family Institute. She is the coinvestigator of federally funded projects in school based health clinics and youth smoking cessation. She is a member of the SC Task Force on Suicide Prevention and is a national trainer in suicide prevention for clinicians. | Dr. Grossman has been at the Medical University since 2002. She has had a 35 year career in academic psychiatric nursing, clinical practice and clinical research which have included developing academic sections of child psychiatric nursing, serving as coinvestigators and coordinators of funded clinical research, and developing family drug court programs. Dr. Grossman has taught in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs in nursing, has provided interdisciplinary supervision in psychotherapy, served on dissertation committees, and mentored student fellowships across disciplines. She has served on numerous professional, academic and governmental committees and tasks forces. She is a strong advocate for innovative roles in psychiatric nursing and the prevention of suicide and is sought after to speak and consult nationally. She is a productive writer and has published numerous articles, chapters, and media productions; in addition she has expertise in media related to suicide prevention and is an expert legal reviewer is suicidology. She may be best known for her publications in youth suicide prevention and her advocacy for suicide prevention. | She has received (along with Drs. Markus Kruesi and Jay Hirsch) the Norbert and Charlotte Rieger Service Award from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the Psychiatric Nursing Clinical Practice Award from the Society for Education and Research in Psychiatric Nursing, MUSC CON Outstanding MSN Faculty Award, and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing. Dr. Grossman's clinical and research interests involve the study of suicide prevention and the development and evaluation of evidence based mental health interventions and health outcomes in family drug courts and school-based health clinics. She is the coauthor of the Emergency Department Means Restriction Intervention, now designated as an effective program in the Suicide Prevention Resource Center Registry of Evidence-Based Suicide Prevention Programs. |
