Dr. Susan D. Newman is an Assistant Professor and Junior Research Scientist in the College of Nursing. She received her Ph.D. in Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Medical University of South Carolina, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Clemson University. Dr. Newman is a Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse with over 13 years of clinical experience in acute inpatient medical rehabilitation, caring for individuals with a variety of disabilities. Her experiences as a rehabilitation nurse provide her with a unique perspective and insight into the needs of individuals with chronic disability. Over her career, Dr. Newman has developed a special interest in and fondness for working with individuals who have sustained spinal cord injury.

Dr. Newman's research reflects her understanding that the availability and accessibility of appropriate resources in the community plays a significant role in the process of adapting to life with a spinal cord injury and in an individual's ability to continue to function as a productive member of society with a chronic physical disability. Her research interests include application of community-based participatory research approaches to address issues affecting community participation, health, and overall quality of life of individuals with spinal cord injury. She has received funding from the Agency on Healthcare Research and Quality and the Rehabilitation Nursing Foundation. She also received the Stephen Stewart Dissertation Award.

Dr. Newman is a member of the American Association of Spinal Cord Injury Nurses, Association of Rehabilitation Nurses, American Public Health Association, Southern Nursing Research Society, and Sigma Theta Tau. She currently teaches in the undergraduate program at MUSC College of Nursing.
