| | Dr. Sheila Smith is Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing and a full member of the faculty of the Graduate College at the Medical University of South Carolina. She received her diploma of nursing at Jeanne Mance School of Nursing in Burlington, Vermont. She received her bachelor of science in nursing degree from Stephen F. Austin State University, Nacogdoches, Texas. She completed a master of science in nursing specializing in Maternal/Family Clinical Specialization and Nursing Education at Northwestern State University of Louisiana. Her doctorate, which she received from Virginia Commonwealth University, is in nursing with focus on health promotion and exercise. She is a Lamaze certified childbirth educator and Lamaze International faculty. She is involved in childbirth teacher training programs in the South Korea, Taiwan, Kenya. Among her numerous memberships, Dr. Smith is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, Southern Nurse Research Society, Aquatic Exercise Association, National Perinatal Association and Association of Women Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nursing. | | Dr. Smith research interests are exercise, obesity, health promotion and the concept of Centering Pregnancy. She is federally funded as the co-principle investigator on the Hispanic Health Initiative. Recently, she was funded Centering Pregnancy for Prematurity Prevention funded March of Dimes and Resting Metabolic Rate During Pregnancy as a Predictor of Maternal Weight Gain and Neonatal Birth Weight. Additionally, she has conducted funded research projects on the aquatic exercise during pregnancy. Dr. Smith's clinical interests involve the care of well women care across the lifecycle. She has extensive clinical experience in high-risk antepartum and intrapartum nursing. Dr. Smith has presented her research at local, national, and international levels. In 2006, she received the MUSC College of Nursing outstanding faculty award. |

About the College
Effective November 1, Teresa Kelechi will assume the role of Department Chair. Employed at MUSC for 22 years, Teresa joined the College of Nursing faculty in 2001. She is a board certified gerontological clinical nurse specialist and a certified wound care nurse. Teresa takes over the reins of Department Chair from Elizabeth Erkel who will retire at the end of the year.
