Dr. Spruill has been a mentee and mentor for National Coalition of Ethnic and Minority Nurses (NCEMNA), a member of American Diabetes Association (ADA), Sigma Theta Tau, Council of American Nurses Science (CANS), Midwest Nursing Research Society (MNRS), Southern Nursing Research Society (SNRS) and National Association of Social Work (NASW).

Currently Dr. Spruill is a member of FDA, Endocrinology and Metabolic Drug Advisory Committee, and American Diabetes Association/ African American National Subcommittee Initiative. Her most recent honors include, the 2011 Trailblazer Award from the National Black Nurses Association, and College of Nursing, 2011 Outstanding Alumnus Award and a Fellow in the Academy of Nursing.

Dr. Spruill teaches in both the Undergraduate and Doctoral program. Her funded research includes a SCTR funded project for engaging the community in the planning proces for establishing a bio bank, and a Diversity Supplement Grant: Genetic contributors to diabetes and dyslipemia in African Americans.
