The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology maintains an active consultation service for children with gastrointestinal, nutritional and hepatic problems. MUSC’s program is listed 39th nationally through U.S. News and World Report’s Best Children’s Hospital rankings. The Pediatric Gastroenterology Division performs over 8,000 outpatient visits and 1,500 inpatient consultations annually. Our faculty performs endoscopic examinations of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract, video capsule endoscopy and advanced endoscopic procedures, such as endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic ultrasound. We also offer motility testing, which includes esophageal, antroduodenal, colonic and anorectal manometry, along with pH impedance studies, liver biopsy, breath hydrogen tests and indirect calorimetry.
The goal of the Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition fellowship is to train academic pediatric gastroenterologists with an emphasis on excellence in clinical care. The first year of the program is devoted to clinical training, emphasizing both our inpatient consultation service as well as outpatient clinic. The focus of the second and third years of fellowship is clinical and laboratory research. For more details on the curriculum, please click here.
Research interests of the Division include: the genetics of IBD, the safety and effectiveness of biologic therapy in IBD, carbohydrate malabsorption/congenital diarrhea, outcomes in ERCP, gastrointestinal manifestations of cystic fibrosis, nutritional outcomes in premature infants, nutrition education, transplant hepatology, immune status in transplant patients and the effects of anesthesia on bowel motility.
