Purpose:

The Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) Internal Medicine Pharmacy Residency Program is designed to develop accountability and expert knowledge expected of an internal medicine clinical pharmacy specialist who serves as an integral member of the health care team. In addition, it will help to develop future leaders in clinical pharmacy practice and education and will prepare individuals to contribute to the body of pharmacotherapy and pharmacy practice knowledge. The Internal Medicine Pharmacy Residency Program builds upon the broad-based competencies achieved in a PGY1 residency, deepening the resident’s ability to provide care in the most complex cases. Therefore, the Internal Medicine Pharmacy Residency Program provides residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and transforming both into improved medication therapy for patients. By the conclusion of the residency, graduates will be prepared to establish a practice as an internal medicine pharmacy specialist or college faculty member. The resident will have developed the tools and skills required to provide excellent patient care, serve an active role in organization committees, present educational material to small and large groups, and participate in clinical research and publishing.

Outcomes:

Specific residency goals and objectives will be established in the beginning of the residency modified according to the resident’s interests and previous experiences and advisor input. To meet the purpose of the residency, the resident will advance to achieve the following outcomes set forth by ASHP:

• Serve as an authoritative resource on the optimal use of medications.
• Optimize the outcomes of internal medicine patients by providing evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team.
• Demonstrate excellence in the provision of training and educational activities for
• health care professionals and health care professionals in training.
• Demonstrate leadership and practice management skills.
• Contribute to the body of pharmacy knowledge in internal medicine.
• Evaluate, manage, and improve the medication-use process.
• Demonstrate skills required to function in an academic setting.
• Conduct outcomes research.

The Residency Experience

The experiences that can be gained from this site by an internal medicine pharmacy resident include a balance of acute care rotations that span the range of internal medicine patients. The resident will also have various levels of involvement in clinical research, department of pharmacy service projects, hospital committees, and teaching of doctor of pharmacy students. The resident does participate in at-home on-call and clinical staffing. The resident will be responsible for organizing, overseeing, and participating in the Medicine Journal Club.

• Lecturing and leading discussions with PharmD students
• Potential to lecture in 4th year medical student residency preparation course
• Inservices to pharmacy, medical, and nursing staff
• Co-preceptor for PharmD students and possibly PGY1 pharmacy residents
• Formal Academician Preparation Program

Preceptors:

• Elective rotations will be precepted by the pharmacy specialist who participates in that service.
• If the resident has an interest area not covered by a specialist, a rotation may be facilitated by the residency program director and co-precepted by a physician mentor.

On-site Interviews Will Be Required

Starting in 2012 the MUSC Pharmacy Program will be using the PhORCAS Application System through ASHP.  Please submit all application materials through the applicant portal on ASHP's website.  The deadline for receipt of a complete application packet is December 31^st.  Applicants can begin submitting materials through PhORCAS on November 19.  Complete applications include the following:

• Letter of intent (uploaded with application)
• Curriculum vitae (uploaded with application)
• Three letters of reference completed by health professionals who can attest to the applicant’s practice abilities and aptitudes (uploaded directly from the authors beginning on November 19)
• At least one letter must be from an immediate supervisor (if applicable - for PGY1 only)
• At least one letter must be from a clinical preceptor
• Official transcripts of all professional pharmacy education
• Class rank (in a sealed envelope from Dean's Office)
• List of Rotations completed.
