Internship Program

MUSC Office of Public Relations Internship Program

MUSC’s Office of Public Relations has been involved in the teaching and mentoring of college-level students as interns since the mid-1990s to support the institution’s mission for providing excellence in internal and external communications.

MUSC is South Carolina’s only academic medical center and is home to the oldest medical school in the South founded in 1824. MUSC operates on a tradition of excellence in the areas of education, research and patient care. MUSC educates and trains more than 3,000 students and residents within its six colleges and employs almost 13,000 employees, including 1,500 faculty members. The 700-plus bed medical center is changing what’s possible to provide a multi-disciplinary team approach to medicine and health care. MUSC is recognized statewide, regionally and nationally as a referral center for trauma, cardiac, neuro and cancer care, mental health, digestive disorders and women’s and children’s health.

Internship duties include the opportunity to research, interview, coordinate and write news stories for the campus’ weekly publication, The Catalyst, and the media relations activities. Interns will learn about or participate in photography, videography and editing, writing press releases, aspects of social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.), crisis communications and assisting with special projects. Another feature of the internship is participation in an externship experience where interns can choose to work in an area outside of public relations to gain more focused, valuable communications skills and experiences.

The MUSC Office of Public Relations Internship Program provides this year-round opportunity (fall, spring and summer) for qualified college students who want to learn and contribute to a collaborative and energetic environment. Intern candidates must be a junior or senior level, undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in a journalism, professional writing, public relations, communications or English program and seeking internship credit.
