Candace Woodson told the story of how after auditioning for the TV show “The Voice,� she was diagnosed with breast cancer. “I came to MUSC, and MUSC gave me hope,� she said. Today, she’s healthy and back to singing. “I wrote this song entitled ‘Free,’� she said, a song that describes how she felt after surviving cancer. She sang it before the crowd in the Ann Edwards Garden at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Casey Honowitz was born six weeks early because he was in distress in his mother’s womb and had the umbilical cord wrapped around him six times. When he was born he had a stroke and was having seizures. MUSC’s Dr. Carol Wagner used therapeutic hypothermia (cooling) to help Casey survive.
