Mark S. Sothmann, Ph.D. is Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at MUSC. He earned his B.A. in history from the University of Northern Iowa, a M.S. in 1976 and a Ph.D. in 1982 with a focus on exercise biochemistry, both degrees from Purdue University. He moved to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1982 and developed the Exercise Research Laboratory where he spent 13 years on the faculty conducting his research in exercise biochemistry and studying human performance in extreme environments. During that period Dr. Sothmann was promoted through the faculty ranks to professor with tenure. He also held clinical faculty appointments in the Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin Medical School and the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Dr. Sothmann moved to Indiana University in 1995 as professor and held the administrative appointments of Associate Dean in the Indiana University School of Medicine from 1997 through 2003, and founding Dean of the Indiana University School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences from 2003 through 2007. He was a founding faculty of the Indiana University School of Informatics and secured federal funding to create the Indiana Center for Rehabilitation Sciences and Engineering Research. In 2007 Dr. Sothmann moved to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) as professor and Dean in the College of Health Professions. Effective July 1, 2010, Dr. Sothmann assumed the administrative appointment of Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at MUSC and was appointed to the permanent position in April 2011 after a national search. From August 2013 through June 2014 Dr. Sothmann served as interim president of MUSC.
Dr. Sothmann serves on numerous national academic, science, and health care education advisory boards, and is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine where he has served in leadership roles. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, NASA, Department of Defense, EEOC, Lilly Endowment, and numerous other agencies. He is a recipient of the University of Wisconsin Foundation Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Endeavors and the Glenn W. Irwin, Jr., M.D. Experience Excellence Recognition Award for Service to Indiana University. In 2011 the Indiana University School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences created the Dr. Mark Sothmann Dean's Leadership Award to be given at commencement to a graduating student nominated by the faculty. A scholarship is named in Dr. Sothmann's honor in the MUSC College of Health Professions.
