Description of Research Program
Current research involves the design and synthesis of novel compounds affecting lipid and lipid metabolism. Selected areas include: (1) Compounds that act as agonists at the peroxisomal proliferator activated receptors (PPARs). Various subtypes of these receptors have been recently discovered to control not only lipid, but also carbohydrate metabolism. Ongoing research is uncovering additional roles for these regulatory receptors. (2) Compounds that affect the lipid ceramides that compose the outer stratum corneum of the skin. Such agents may allow enhanced transdermal penetration of pharmaceutical agents, thereby facilitating this long-term route of administration.
