Melisa D. Rowland, M.D.

Melisa D. Rowland is Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the Family Services Research Center of the Medical University of South Carolina.  Dr. Rowland’s research interests focus on developing, implementing and evaluating, clinically effective family-based interventions for youths presenting serious emotional and behavioral problems. Currently, she is the co-investigator in charge of clinical and project implementation on a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)-funded study designed to evaluate the relative effectiveness of three training protocols with increasing intensity in supporting the implementation of contingency management by practitioners treating adolescent substance abusers in the South Carolina mental health and substance abuse sectors.  Dr. Rowland is also the co-investigator in charge of clinical implementation for an Annie E. Casey funded project designed to develop an evidence-based continuum of services for youths with antisocial behaviors at risk of out of home placement in New York City.  Dr. Rowland has been the primary investigator for two NIDA grants. One was an R21 designed to evaluate the efficacy of a modified version of the Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA) for use with substance abusing caregivers of adolescents receiving multisystemic therapy (MST).  The other grant was a K12 award focusing on the development of empirically grounded community-based treatments for youths presenting with substance use disorders.  As such, Dr. Rowland has extensive experience providing, supervising and researching community-based clinical services for youths and their family members who present with serious emotional, behavioral and substance use problems.
