| Dr. Thomas Uhde received his BS (Psychology) and MD degrees, respectively, from Duke University (1971) and the University of Louisville (1975). Dr. Uhde obtained his psychiatry and research training at Yale University (1975-1979) and the National Institute of Mental Health (1979-1981). Dr. Uhde was a senior and tenured scientist at the NIMH and served as the founding Chief of the Section on Anxiety and Mood Disorders (Biological Psychiatry Branch) (1981-1993). Dr. Uhde served as Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at Wayne State University from 1993-2001 and was the first President and Chief Executive Officer of the University Psychiatry Centers, a mixed faculty and private sector group practice. This practice model served as an early prototype for mental health and outcomes services research. Dr. Uhde also provided scientific leadership as Assistant Dean for Neurosciences and Associate Dean for Research at Wayne State University, the nation’s largest single-campus medical school, which at that time was ranked 22nd by the National Science Foundation in total research expenditures. From 2003-2007, Dr. Uhde was Professor & Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Penn State University, during which time he served as Director of the Central Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute, Co-Director of the Pennsylvania State University Neuroscience Institute and was the founding Director of the Penn State College of Medicine Neuroscience Research Institute. Dr. Uhde was appointed to his current positions (Chair, Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences; Executive Director, Institute of Psychiatry; and Co-Director, Neuroscience Institute) at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in 2007. Dr. Uhde’s primary area of research is the investigation of anxiety, mood, and related sleep disorders. Dr. Uhde co-founded and was Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal Depression & Anxiety for over a decade. He is recognized as one of the world’s leaders in the study and treatment of anxiety disorders and has been the recipient of many scientific honors and awards. He has authored or co-authored over 320 scientific papers and is among the world’s most cited scientists in his field [ISI Highly-Cited Scientists (Psychology/Psychiatry)]. |
