        Sarah W. Book, MD

  
SPEAKER BIO

Dr. Sarah W. Book is a Psychiatrist and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at MUSC.  She is an active clinician, researcher, and educator.  Her areas of specialization are in the fields of mood and anxiety disorders, addiction, and of co-occurring psychiatric disorders with substance-use disorders, with an emphasis on social anxiety disorder and alcohol use. She works in a busy clinical setting where she practices both general psychiatry and addiction medicine.  Dr. Book has received federal funding from National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).  She also teaches medical students and psychiatry residents and is a sought-after mentor.   She has had the best example in mentoring by her own mentor, Dr. Carrie Randall. 

She also has a busy household with her husband, Michael, and their three children, George, Sam and Anna.

  
  
  
      OBJECTIVES                                                                                                                                                               
       At the completion of this session, the participant will be able to:
       

1.  Describe the unique relationship between social anxiety and alcohol problems.
2.  Identify treatment obstacles to people with social anxiety seeking addictions treatment.
3.  Identify challenges to appropriate treatment planning for people with excessive alcohol use seeking treatment for social 
     anxiety.
