        Jane M. Charles, MD

  
SPEAKER BIO

Dr. Jane Charles is a Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrician in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics at MUSC.

Dr. Charles is an active clinician, researcher, and educator. Her areas of specialization are in the fields of Autism Spectrum Disorders and Intellectual Disabilities. She manages a diagnostic clinic for children suspected of ASDs and provides follow up and medication management for children into adulthood. For the past ten years, Dr. Charles has been co-PI for the South Carolina Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network (SC ADDM), funded by the Centers for Disease Control. This project provides ongoing surveillance for ASDs and intellectual disabilities in South Carolina. She has received research funding as PI or co-Investigator for a variety of grants exploring issues related to developmental disabilities.

  
  
  
      OBJECTIVES                                                                                                                                                               
       At the completion of this session, the participant will be able to:
       

1. Describe components of a valid surveillance study.
2. Discuss changes in ASD prevalence over time.
3. Describe reasons why ASD prevalence may have changed.
