Biographical Sketch

Dr. Cortese received her Ph.D. in biopsychology from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. She received postdoctoral training in neuroimaging and anxiety at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, PA and completed her postdoctoral training at the Medical University of South Carolina. In 2010, she joined the faculty at MUSC as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Dr. Cortese’s research interests include the neurobiology of anxiety and related sleep problems. She has a Mentored Career Development Award (K01) from the National Institute of Mental Health to study the neuronal networks associated with odor-induced anxiety in veterans with combat-related PTSD. She is also either the principle investigator or co-investigator on several other funded projects evaluating the role of odors in anxiety and addiction.
