Matthew S. Koval, M.D.

Dr. Matthew Koval has been with the Medical University of South Carolina’s Department of Psychiatry for nearly 24 years. He graduated from West Virginia University in 1986 with a B.A. in biology and chemistry and then went on to the West Virginia University School of Medicine and graduated with an M.D. in 1990. He completed a general psychiatry residency and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina in 1995 and joined the faculty at that time. Dr. Koval is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Koval, an associate professor, is the director of youth inpatient services for the Institute of Psychiatry at MUSC and has lead an inpatient treatment team for youth patients for over 18 years and therefore has vast experience in acutely ill child and adolescent patients. In addition, he is the director of the consultation/liaison service for psychiatric consultation to MUSC Children’s Hospital and is the associate residency training director for the child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at MUSC. His non-clinical duties are mostly in the area of teaching for residents and medical students where he has received many honors and awards.
