Dr. Levy graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1994. He completed his residency training and chief residency at the Medical University of South Carolina along with a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in 1999. As the Administrative Chief Resident in psychiatry program, he won the Pfizer Psychiatry Resident of the Year Award in recognition of dedication and commitment to the field of psychiatry and also was awarded the Dr. Henry P. and M. Page Durkee Laughlin Foundation Award, a peer selected award, in recognition of professional achievement, dedication, and scholarship. Following his fellowship, he became employed with the Department of Mental Health in Charleston and remained on faculty and was involved with teaching medical students and residents. In 2007, he took a job at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, where he currently is employed. While employed at Charleston/Dorchester County Mental Health, he worked one on one supervising residents and students. He became an instructor for mock oral exams and clinical skills exams for psychiatric residents. He won the Circle of Excellence Award, an award for outstanding clinical teaching by a volunteer faculty of senior psychiatry clerkship and the Psychiatry Golden Apple Award for teaching by a volunteer faculty for the senior clerkship. In 2006, Dr. Levy received the honor of the Nancy CA Roeske, MD Certificate of Recognition for Excellence in Medical Student Education, a national award given in recognition of outstanding and sustained contributions to medical education. Dr. Levy has been involved with clinical work since completion of his residency in 1999. He has cared for many patients over the years. He worked with Assessment Mobile Crisis, spending some time in the community being involved with barricades and people threatening to jump off the Cooper River Bridge. This led to close relationships with the police department and other emergency services. Now that he is working with the VA, he continues to be involved with the community. Dr. Levy has a governor appointed position on the Board of Directors for Charleston/Dorchester County Mental Health providing guidance on management of mental health services. He also frequently is a guest speaker for the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) providing "ask the doctor" sessions. Currently, Dr. Levy is the Associate Director of Residency Training and has an invested interest in the education of our psychiatry residents taking an active role as the Intern Faculty Advisor, Chairman of the Curriculum Committee and a member of the Resident Education Committee. The Resident Curriculum Committee involves scheduling and organizing didactics for the psychiatry residents along with ensuring that GME requirement are met. The Resident Education Committee involves the monitoring and development of appropriate educational experiences for psychiatric residents. With his current role of Section Chief of Outpatient Mental Health and the Site Coordinator for the residency program at the VA, he supervises residents for their VA outpatient clinical experience. In addition, he also does biweekly longitudinal supervision with several residents. He manages many employees including psychiatrists, nurses, casemanagers, administrative assistances along with many residents. While doing this, he continues to be very active with seeing patients and providing clinical care. Dr. Levy enjoys working with the residents and having benefitted greatly from the residency program himself, finds it rewarding to continue to foster the tradition of a strong work ethic along with excellent clinical skills. | |
