Biographical Sketch

Dr. Smith is an Assistant Professor at the Center for Drug and Alcohol Programs (CDAP) in MUSC's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.  He earned a B.S. in Psychology/Philosophy from Sam Houston State University, and he earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology at the University of Cincinnati in the Clinical Health Psychology track.  He completed a pre-doctoral internship at the Charleston Consortium Psychology Internship Program at MUSC.  Dr. Smith's research interests include psychopathology and treatment models of co-occurring anxiety and alcohol use disorders, gender issues in help-seeking, motivational interviewing and other brief interventions for substance use disorders, and psychological measurement.  He is Director of CDAP’s outpatient clinic and of the Institute of Psychiatry’s Centralized Inpatient Programming Service.  This clinical administrative work involves developing and integrating empirically-based treatments for substance use and co-occurring disorders into existing treatment programming.
