Biographical Sketch
Dr. Ed Weiss is a hospitalist on the Senior Care Unit of the Institute of Psychiatry. He treats all patients referred to the Institute of Psychiatry who are over sixty years old with psychiatric and behavioral signs and symptoms of dementia. He treats late life depression, delirium, bipolar illness and schizophrenia. His teaching interests are focused on teaching medical students during the third year of Psychiatry rotation on the Senior Care Unit. He also teaches second year residents on the Senior Care Unit. He has a very strong interest in Family Systems Theory and Therapy and teach a year long course in Bowen Family Systems to the fifth year Child Fellows.

I graduated the public school system in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and entered the University of Pittsburgh where I studied Chemistry. I was accepted to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine after my third year of college but decided to complete my college studies and then entered Medical School in 1961. This was followed by an Internal Medicine internship at the Dallas VA Hospital and then a three year Psychiatry Residency at the Institute of Living. I entered the United States Air Force in 1969 and spent two years at the School of Aerospace Medicine as a flight surgeon. I then moved to Suburban Maryland and opened a private practice for 22 years. I left that practice in 1993 and accepted a position at Allegheny University Neuropsychiatric Institute as an attending Psychiatrist on the Geropsychiatry Unit. I left Pittsburgh after four years and went to the Greenville Hospital System and established a Geriatric Psychiatry Inpatient Unit, Outpatient Clinic and nursing home consultation service. After operating those programs for six years I moved to Charleston to assume leadership of the Geropsychiatry programs at the Institute of Psychiatry and start an outpatient Geropsychiatry Clinic and nursing home consultation practice.I am married to Dorothy Weiss, a medical surgical nurse at MUSC. We have a beautiful daughter, Shoshana who attends James Island Charter HS.
