Applicant Interview Process
Beginning on November 1st, our Psychology Education Committee members will review all application materials and decide who to invite for on-campus interviews, which are issued on a "rolling" basis (i.e., not all invitations issued at the same time), usually in December and January. It is likely that some individuals -- even those who submitted their applications at the same -- will receive interview invitations at different times. This is not a reflection of the quality of any individual's application; it is simply a consequence of the rate at which applicant materials can be reviewed. If you have not received a call inviting you to interview, you may call or e-mail the internship offices to find out the status of the interview selection process.
Applicants selected for interviews will be notified VIA E-MAIL. The invitation will include available dates for interview, as well as the names of faculty members who may be interested in interviewing you. You will be asked to respond to the invitation by selecting a date and by providing the names of the faculty members with whom you are most interested in meeting (which may include faculty members who were not mentioned in your invitation). There are a limited number of interview slots available on each given date, and these are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so it is in the applicant's best interest to respond to the invitation promptly with a preferred interview date. For those applicants who can demonstrate that a personal interview trip would be a hardship, a telephone interview can be requested if the Director of Clinical Training sends a letter to the Internship Director describing the hardship.
We will make every effort to arrange interviews with the faculty members you are most interested in meeting with on the day of your interview. If we are unable to arrange an interview with your desired faculty member(s), we will try to arrange interviews with faculty members who have similar interests. If, after your interviews, you would still like to speak with a particular faculty member, let us know and we will do our best to arrange some type of in-person or telephone interview.
When you arrive on campus for your interview, your day will begin with an orientation meeting, at which time you will receive your interview schedules. This is followed by three 45 - 50 minute interviews with three separate faculty members. (Some walking between buildings on campus may be required for these interviews, so be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.) After your morning interviews, you may lunch with one or two current interns, after which the intern(s) will give you a brief tour of the MUSC campus. An exit interview, typically conducted by the Director, Dr. Dean Kilpatrick, will round out your day. This meeting is the best time to ask any remaining questions you have about our internship program, and to mention any additional faculty members you may wish to speak with.
Your interview day will typically end around 3pm, so applicants who wish to fly out of Charleston the same day should be able to make a 5pm or later flight. However, if you choose to stay in the city a little longer, check out our About the City page for some information about area attractions!
