Peter M. Miller, Ph.D. is Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the Center for Drug and Alcohol Programs at the Medical University of South Carolina. He serves as Public Education Coordinator for the Alcohol Research Center. Dr. Miller is board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology. He specializes in research on alcohol screening and intervention in medical and surgical settings, with particular reference to heavy drinking and alcohol-sensitive diseases such as hypertension and oral cancer.  He is a past Chair of a National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Initial Review Group (IRG). He has published over 90 scientific articles, has authored 11 books and has served as editor on several other books.  Dr. Miller is Editor-in-Chief of the research journal, Addictive Behaviors and serves on several editorial boards.

  • Technology transfer of adjunctive pharmacotherapies into alcoholism treatment settings
  • Facilitating alcohol screening in medical and surgical settings
  • Alcohol screening and intervention with hypertensive patients
  • Case management of alcohol dependence in primary health care
  • Biochemical alcohol screening using % carbohydrate-deficient transferrin
  • Predictors of continued tobacco and heavy alcohol use in oral and pharyngeal cancer patients
  • Tobacco and alcohol screening in dental patients being screened for oral and pharyngeal cancer
