The Breast Imaging Division is responsible for the interpretation of all breast imaging studies. State-of-the-art imaging as it applies to breast diagnosis is offered, including digital screening and diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound with elastography and breast MRI. The breast interventional procedures offered include stereotactic biopsy, ultrasound guided biopsy, MRI guided biopsy and preoperative wire localization for the surgical team.
The main department is based in one convenient location in the Hollings Cancer Center and houses four digital mammography units, two ultrasound units and one stereotactic unit. A 3T MRI with dedicated breast coil and full biopsy capability is located nearby on campus at Rutledge Tower. Two additional outreach centers are now available in North Charleston and Mount Pleasant allowing greater access to care for the surrounding communities.
Under the supervision of Dr. Etta Pisano and Dr. Abid Irshad the division is actively involved in numerous ongoing research projects, including the investigation of emerging technologies in breast imaging. The breast imaging division members all play an active role in research and present those findings annually at many of the national radiological society meetings as well as producing peer-reviewed publications.
The team of fellowship trained breast imagers is dedicated to patient care working closely with a team of breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and pathologists on a daily basis as well as at the weekly multidisciplinary conference where all new and ongoing cancer patients are discussed. In addition to patient care, the breast imaging team also plays and active role in fellow, resident and medical student education through didactic lectures, case conferences and on-the-job training.
The division performed a total of 21,969 procedures last year including 1,190 interventional procedures:
11,136 screening mammograms
5,913 diagnostic mammograms
3,250 breast ultrasound examinations
436 breast MR studies
651 ultrasound-guided biopsies
254 needle localization procedures
220 stereotactic biopsies
44 MR guided biopsies
