Department of Radiology


The Department of Radiology and Radiological Science is an academic department within the College of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. Our department has a long tradition of excellence in both clinical and educational activities. We are guided by the mission of MUSC to maintain excellence in education, research and service.

The department has one of the most advanced diagnostic imaging facilities in the country ranging from conventional radiography to dual source multi-detector CT, twin beam PET/CT, 3 Tesla large bore MRI, digital
3D mammography (Tomosynthesis) and a state of the art Tomo guided biopsy system. We offer a wide array of advanced image-guided procedures for the diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment of a range of diseases including occlusion of aortic aneurysms, uterine artery embolisation and tumor ablation therapies.




  • Dr. Philip Costello is Named President-Elect of the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS)

  • Dr. Susan Ackerman is Named President of the American Association of Women in Radiology (AAWR) for 2016

  • Dr. Susan Ackerman, Dr. James Ravenel, and Dr. Joseph Schoepf were recently bestowed Fellowship status in the American College of  Radiology (FACR).  This is one of the highest honors received by a radiologist

  • Dr. Joseph Schoepf will assume the position of Editor of the Journal of Thoracic Imaging later this year
