In the case of an emergency, DLAR is authorized to use physical forms of trauma such as cervical dislocation or other forms from the AVMA Guidelines on Euthanasia to euthanize rodents if carbon dioxide or injectable euthanasia solution is not available.
Use of carbon dioxide as a method of euthanasia requires verification of death after euthanasia by either thoracotomy or cervical dislocation. This must be done to ensure the irreversibility of the procedure. (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-02-062.html)
