Spinal Cord Injury Facts and Figures
  • Average annual South Carolina incidence rate of traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) is 67/1,000,000.
  • South Carolina TSCI incidence rate is 22% higher than national average of 55/1,000,000.
  • About 16% of the TSCI injuries have co-occurring traumatic brain injury (TBI).
  • 12% of the TSCI injuries are complete (ASIA=A).
  • Another 12% have sensory function only (no motor function preserved below the neurological level up to the sacral segment).
  • 66% of the TSCI occur between the ages of 20 and 54.
  • 3/4th of injuries occur among males.
  • All races are equally affected.
  • Highest average acute care charge of $106,820 is incurred by those with complete paralysis (ASIA=A).
  • Lowest is $37,050 incurred by those with recoverable TSCI (ASIA=E).
  • Overall acute care charge of TSCI (acute care hospital fee) from 1990-2009 is $214,909,136, which indicates an annual acute care charge of $ 10,746,000 is expended for acute hospital care of TSCI only.
  • Using the willingness-to-pay method of cost analysis, the total economic impact of TSCI in South Carolina is estimated at $31,950,000 per annum in 2005 dollar values.
  • 63% of TSCI are the result of motor vehicle injuries.
Facts and figures are from the South Carolina Head and Spinal Cord Injury Surveillance System supported by the Head and Spinal Cord Injury Division of the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs.--INFO--
These figures are based on averages and generalities from research. Information such as cost may vary dramatically between individuals. These figures also are subject to change overtime due to either improved methods of collecting data, or actual changes due to unspecified factors. The information should be used to gain a better general understanding of SCI.
