A Resolution MUSC Statement of Equal Opportunity 1. Purpose: To show MUSC Student Government support for members of the Gay Straight Alliance who request an addition to the admissions equal opportunity policy at MUSC. 2. Whereas, the Office of Diversity and University in general have made a commitment and obligation to protect all students from discrimination, including those who face discrimination because of their sexual orientation, and 3. Whereas, the addition of sexual orientation to the policy would be in keeping with the mission statement from the Student Diversity Office, and the current draft of the MUSC’s new Code of Conduct which includes the phrase “sexual orientation” in the opening section, where it enumerates those who should be treated civilly without respect to characteristics or background, and 4. Whereas, many of our peer institutions such as University of South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Duke, UNC, and Medical College of Georgia have added this phrase to their admissions policy or the equivalent thereof, 5. Be it resolved by the Medical University of South Carolina Student Government Association assembled in regular session the following: 6. That, the admissions equal opportunity policy at MUSC be revised and changed to read as follows: The Medical University of South Carolina does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, sex, age, national origin, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, or marital status in the administration of admission policies, educational policies, financial aid, employment, or any other university activity.
