FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 25, 2013

With great sadness I must report that this morning Dr. Rick Frykberg died peacefully, surrounded by his family. Having recruited Rick to the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville almost thirty years ago, I have had the pleasure of watching his career rise from brilliant academic surgeon to national leader.  Rick’s accomplishments in management of vascular injury are well known and now form some of the basic tenets of modern trauma care. His work in development of programs for preparation and training for mass casualty care has literally set the international standard for this now essential component of modern global health care. Rick served in leadership roles for many national organizations, including as President of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma and, most recently, as a Governor of the American College of Surgeons representing the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma. Rick and his wife, Patti, were pillars of our department.  Our children grew up together, and our mutual children, our residents, quickly came to admire and respect the encyclopedic fund of knowledge and intense commitment to education that Rick brought to their lives. Most people remember the 1983 Beirut Marine barracks bombing, but very few know that many casualties were avoided and lives saved because the surgeon embarked in the USS Iwo Jima off the coast took it upon himself to visit the shore based medical facilities and establish a system of casualty triage “just in case”. The surgeon was LCDR Eric Robert Frykberg, MC, USNR.  His foresight saved many lives, his insight has forged systems that will save many more. The world is a little safer because of Rick Frykberg. Unfortunately, it is a lot lonelier with his passing.
