Department of Surgery
Established in 1824, the Department of Surgery at MUSC has a long and respected tradition of excellence in clinical care, research, and education. The clinical programs within the Department of Surgery are well recognized for excellence in adult cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, transplant surgery as well as general and GI surgery.
The Department’s congenital heart surgery program is among the world's best. In 2016, U.S. News & World Report ranked the MUSC Children's Hospital Cardiology & Heart Surgery #20 in the nation.
In addition, the Department houses nationally recognized expertise in the surgical management of chronic pancreatitis, and bariatric surgery. MUSC is one of just 30 National Pancreas Foundation Centers across the country, and it’s the only NPF Center in South Carolina.
The transplant surgery program is recognized for high performance with excellent clinical results. In 2016, MUSC's Kidney Transplant Program was named for performing the 17th highest number of kidney transplants in the country.
