About the Division of Education
The department is fortunate to have a large and a varied volume of clinical material which facilitates educational opportunities.
Education in the Department of Surgery includes Graduate Medical Education Resident and Fellowship Programs, Medical Student Clinical Clerkships, Cores and Electives, Basic Scientist Training, Simulation Laboratory Experience, and Multiple Continuing Education seminars and classes. Annually the department conducts a three day Post Graduation Course in General Surgery with attendance by surgeons from across the country. The General Surgery Residency Training Program received full accreditation from the Residency Review Committee ACGME following the most recent review in 2006.
Complementing the clinical training, are opportunities to participate in Basic Science Research. Residents may spend one or two years in laboratory research with a faculty mentor on a one to one basis. This opportunity is not mandatory and is based on careful resident selection.
The Surgical Clerkship for third year students and Surgical Core for fourth year students are innovative and include hands on experience in the simulation laboratory. Annually a Resident Research Recognition Day is held at which time residents have the opportunity to present their research work. This research is conducted under the guidance, and close mentoring of faculty members. Awards are given for the best clinical and research presentations. On a regular basis residents are sponsored by the department to present research data at a variety of regional and national meetings. Scientific publication is strongly encouraged within the training program.
The surgical education program continues to attract some of the brightest medical students and residents who come from diverse geographic areas. Residents who graduate from our program have an outstanding record of selection for the most competitive fellowships in multiple specialties in surgery and have been successful in securing positions in either academic departments or in the community practice of general surgery throughout the country.
The simulation laboratory includes an array of simulation equipment designed to allow surgical residents to practice new skills in a safe, faculty mentored, environment. The simulation laboratory includes devices that incorporate haptics (sense of touch) and allow mentors to track a resident’s performance during the training session. The simulation laboratory also includes a wide variety of clinically based simulation scenarios. The fundamentals of laparoscopic surgery (FLS) course is in an education and skills training module which has become the standard evaluating basic skills and knowledge re: laparoscopy. All surgical residents graduating from the Medical University of South Carolina as of 2009 will be FLS certified.
