Resident Education

Basic Science
The Basic Science Course is intended to provide an introduction to within general surgery, with all essential topics covered.  The conferences are held weekly from September through June every Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the 2-West Amphitheater for PGY1+2 residents and in Room 420-J Clinical Sciences Building for the PGY3-5 residents.  Attendance is required for all residents (PGY1-PGY5), and residents are excused from clinical duties on all services (including the operating room) during this time except for emergency care of patients.  The schedules of conference topics and presenters are distributed annually.  Residents are expected to prepare in advance for the weekly conference by reading the appropriate chapter(s) in Greenfield’s as noted on the conference schedule for the PGY1+2 residents and the ACS Surgery Curriculum for the PGY3-5 residents.

Grand Rounds
Department of Surgery Grand Rounds are scheduled every Tuesday (September-June) at 7 am in the 2-West Amphitheater.  These grand rounds are mandatory for all surgical faculty, house officers and students on service.  Attendance records are maintained in the Department.   Selected residents will participate on a regular basis in the grand rounds presentation and will, on occasion, be responsible for the entire grand rounds.

Morbidity and Mortality Conference
Morbidity and Mortality Conference is held every Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. in 2-West Amphitheater.  Attendance is mandatory for all surgical housestaff, students and attendings.  Attendance records are maintained in the Department.  The service reports are reviewed from the previous week and all complications and deaths are presented and discussed in detail by the resident responsible for that service or performing the procedure.  The responsible resident is expected to have all pertinent x-rays, operative photographs, and/or pathology specimens available for this conference and to be prepared to discuss their cases in depth having prepared themselves by a thorough review of the pertinent literature.

Journal Club
Surgical Journal Club is held the fourth Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. and attendance is mandatory for house officers.  Topics and articles for presentation will be distributed inhouse by the chief resident in charge of coordinating this conference.   

Resident Meeting
All residents meet on a quarterly basis with Dr. Brothers and Dr. Cole.  In addition, Dr. Brothers will meet with each resident from each year on a semi-annual basis to review evaluations.

Chiefs' Meeting
All chief residents meet with Drs. Brothers and Cole weekly at 6:30 am every Tuesday in Room 420J Clin. Sci. Bldg.

Service Rounds/Conferences
Attendings will make individual rounds on a daily basis with various members of the housestaff–Please check with the specific service to see what service rounds and/or conferences apply.
