H. Biemann Othersen Jr, MD
Over the past 50 years, H. Biemann Othersen Jr., MD, has emerged as one of the most respected and beloved pediatric surgeons in South Carolina. A native of Charleston, Dr. Othersen earned his medical degree from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1953 and spent the next 12 years pursuing his post-graduate surgical training at Philadelphia General Hospital, the University of Pennsylvania, the Medical College of South Carolina, the Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and Massachusetts General Hospital. During this time, he also served two years in the U.S. Naval Reserves. In 1965, Dr. Othersen joined the faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina to serve as an assistant professor of surgery and as the university's first chief of pediatric surgery. At the time, he was the first pediatric surgeon in South Carolina. Over the next several years, Dr. Othersen rose to a number of key leadership positions within the Medical University, including medical director of Medical University Hospital, associate medical director of the Medical University of South Carolina, the first medical director of MUSC Children's Hospital and emeritus chief of pediatric surgery. His expertise in the surgical care of children also led him to enjoy strong collaborative relationships with other hospitals throughout the Lowcountry, including Charleston Memorial Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, Roper Hospital and East Cooper Hospital. Throughout his career, Dr. Othersen has served as a tireless advocate for children's health and pediatric surgical specialists. He has held membership in 30 professional organizations on the local, state, national and international levels, including the Charleston County Medical Society, the South Carolina Pediatric Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the British Association of Pediatric Surgeons. He also held leadership positions in many of these groups, serving as president of the American Pediatric Surgical Association, governor of the American College of Surgeons, president of the American Cancer Society's South Carolina chapter, president of the South Carolina Surgical Association and president of the Charleston County Medical Society, to name a few. Dr. Othersen's contributions to children's health and the field of pediatric surgery have been recognized by a multitude of organizations, including his other alma mater, the College of Charleston; the Medical University of South Carolina; the University of South Carolina; and the S.C. Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, which presented Dr. Othersen with its Career Achievement Award. Dr. Othersen also was the first recipient of the S.C. Safe Kids Leadership award and the Chapter Chairman's award, presented by the S.C. Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Now, to recognize Dr. Othersen for his many achievements and to promote continued growth and discovery in the field of pediatric surgery, the Medical University of South Carolina would like to create a new lectureship to be named in his honor: the H. Biemann Othersen, Jr Visiting Lectureship.
