Islet Cell Transplantation

Functions of the Pancreas

  • Creates digestive juices that help push food from the abdomen into the small intestine (exocrine).
  •  Produces insulin, which is used by the body to “unlock” cells so they can take in glucose from food consumed for energy (endocrine).

Chronic Pancreatitis

Inflammation caused digestive enzymes beginning to attack the pancreas instead of going after the food that causes pancreatitis.

Islet Autotransplantation
Islet autotransplantation can avoid brittle diabetes in a significant number of patients.
