Sustainability & Recycling - Climate

The MUSC Campus, showing its proximity to the Charleston harborProtecting the environment and the people who depend on it from the threats and challenges imposed by climate change is a core value of MUSC Sustainability and is essential for MUSC's greater mission to build healthy communities. To do this, MUSC is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions through a Climate Action Plan.

Climate change is caused by excess carbon dioxide (CO2)in the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels. This excess CO2 acts like a "heat trapping blanket," trapping in the sun's energy and heating our planet's land and water.

For Charleston, sea level rise and coastal flooding present a major challenge. City officials have presented a plan for sea level rise and other adaptation, which can be found on the City Sea Level Rise site. To combat climate change MUSC seeks to lower greenhouse gas emissions with key initiatives in: transportation, energy, water, waste, food, and green building.

To protect against the damaging effects of climate change MUSC strives to create a more resilient built-environment: see MUSC noted for Mitigation Best Practice on FEMA's web page.
