Sick Leave

Accrued sick leave may be used for personal medical needs, including illness or injury, medical and dental appointments and temporary disability; care of an immediate family member; care of ill foster children; and for adoption. The amount of accrued sick leave that can be used for the care of ill family members, foster children and adoption is limited.

Accrual Rates & Use:
- Full-time (40 hours per week) classified/unclassified non-faculty/leave eligible research grant/faculty employees accrue sick leave at the rate of 10 hours per month (15 days per calendar year).
- Part-time classified/unclassified non-faculty/leave eligible research grant/faculty employees established to work at least 20 hours per week earn sick leave on a pro rata basis.
- The maximum accrual for sick leave is 1560 hours (195 days). The maximum amount of unused sick leave that may be carried over into a new calendar year is 1440 hours (180 days).

General Information:
Employees who are in a pay status for at least one-half of the workdays of the month earn sick leave for the full month.
Employees may use up to 10 8-hour days (80 hours) of accrued sick leave to care for an “immediate” family member or foster child(ren). “Immediate” family and foster child(ren) are defined as:
1. The employee’s spouse and children; and,
2. The following relatives of the employee or spouse: Mother, Father, Brother, Sister, Grandparent, Legal guardian, and Grandchildren, if the grandchild resides with the employee and the employee is the primary caretaker of the grandchild.
3. Foster children legally placed in temporary custody with the employee as a foster parent.

Residents and Postdoctoral Fellows do not accrue sick leave under these guidelines. Temporary and Student employees do not accrue sick leave.
