Americans with Disabilities Act

The Department of Human Resources Management is available to assist MUSC employees, who have a disability, to obtain reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The ADA considers an individual with a disability as a person wh

  • Has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities;
  • Has a record of such an impairment; or
  • Is regarded as having an impairment.

A reasonable accommodation is an adjustment to a job or work environment that makes it possible for an individual with a disability to perform the essential job duties for a position for which he or she is otherwise qualified.

Reasonable accommodations include, but are not limited t

  • Job restructuring, modification of work schedules, reassignment to a vacant position;
  • Acquiring or modifying equipment or devices;
  • Providing special training materials or an interpreter for special meetings; or,
  • Making existing facilities commonly used by the majority of employees, accessible to and usable by employees with disabilities.

In order to accommodate an employee, a manager is not required to adjust quality or production standards, provide personal use items such as glasses or hearing aides, or hire special assistants to help an employee perform his or her job. However, managers are encouraged to consult with the Department of Human Resources Management for assistance.

Employees who may require an accommodation must complete and submit the Application for Reasonable Accommodation located at http://www.musc.edu/hrm2/forms. To ensure that an accommodation is appropriate, an employee may be required to provide a statement from his or her physician.

For assistance, employees may contact Edra Pinckney, at extension 2-4289.

Employees are also encouraged to review Human Resources Policy No. 24, Reasonable Accommodations and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
