The Medical University of South Carolina holds a license for the use of radioactive material. The license is granted by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control under the auspices of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Provisions of the license require MUSC to be in full compliance with all regulations regarding ionizing radiation required by both federal and state statutes. Under direction of the MUSC Radiation Safety Committee, the Radiation Safety Office is to ensure compliance with relevant state and federal regulations and provide oversight and guidance to authorized users of radioactive materials and radioation producing devices within MUSC.

Radiation Safety Office staff ensures the proper receipt, use, and disposal of all radioactive material and radiation producing machines.  An interactive system of inspections, evaluations, training and emergency preparedness is in place to monitor all activities involving radiation to maintain exposure "As Low As Reasonably Achievable" (ALARA).  It is the mission of the Radiation Safety Office,  through the use of audits, consultation, and the enforcement of policies established by the radiation safety committee to promote a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, and the public.
