As a network operator, MUSC has a registered point of contact with the US Copyright Office, to which copyright holders are required to address DMCA Notices of Claimed Infringement pertaining to alleged violations of copyright that are believed to originate on MUSC's network. DMCA Notices that are sent to this e-mail address are routed to MUSC Legal Counsel, and to the Information Security Office. The ISO sends an e-mail acknowledgement of receipt of the Notice, and initiates an internal investigation of the alleged infringement. If the DMCA Notice is determined to have merit, then the ISO initiates the "takedown" procedures that are required under the DMCA, and initiates the internal follow-up actions that are required by the MUSC Computer Use Policy.
