History

The Healthcare Simulation Center opened in June 2008 as an interprofessional, multi-disciplinary center for simulation-based education. Under its first director, John J. Schaefer, MD the center gained recognition from multiple organizations, including Laerdal, the American College of Surgeons, Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. The center was also one of the first simulation centers to be accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.

In the years since its opening, the Healthcare Simulation Center has provided simulation-based educational support ranging from basic skills training to competency-based education. In 2016, the Healthcare Simulation Center team supported 7900 student encounters and 5800 hours of  “in-center” simulation-based education, plus an additional 400 “in-situ” hours.

2017 marked a new era for the center when Frances Lee, DBA, was named Interim Director and strategic initiatives designed to focus on the academic and patient care missions of the Medical University enterprise were begun.
