MOCA Part IV Simulation at a Glance

You are likely reading this brochure because you are in need of MOCA Part IV Simulation credits and because you have grown tired of traditional continuing medical education (CME) with a lecture-based format.  If that is the case, then our Anesthesia Crisis Leadership Training (ACLT) simulation course is right for you!  Over 75% of your day will be spent in hands-on, small group, high-fidelity simulation where you are challenged with a variety of emergencies in the perioperative arena.  As an example, your team may manage intraoperative cardiogenic shock in one session, a difficult airway in the next, and then severe anaphylaxis.  The goal of our simulation course is a) to expand the range of anesthetic emergencies you are comfortable managing and b) offer specific leadership skills for managing a team during a crisis.

This simulation course fulfills one requirement of the American Board of Anesthesiology’s (ABA) Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program (MOCA®) Part IV.  Please consult the ABA website, www.theABA.org, for a list of all MOCA® requirements.

Our ACLT course is given at the MUSC Healthcare Simulation Center (MUSC), which is part of the ASA-Endorsed Simulation Education Network.  The MUSC center is outfitted with the latest equipment in simulation technology. But more important than that, our faculty and staff have spent several years creating and refining the high-fidelity simulation course that you can take for MOCA Part IV credit.

Course Objective

Demonstrate competency with interpersonal communication skills needed when communicating with anesthesiologist and medical team for a range of patient cases during critical events in the perioperative period.

After you have enrolled in the course and full payment is received, you will receive an email with the full details of the course to include a link to the pre-course preparation online resource for review of the course topics. The Medical University of South Carolina designates this live activity and enduring material for a maximum of 12 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

On the day of the course, our faculty will introduce you to the simulation environment and give you a hands-on orientation to the simulator and all equipment used in the course.  Performing in the team leader role can often be a daunting task for many physicians.  As such, one of our main goals for this course is to create a safe and constructive learning environment, while at the same time delivering high-quality simulation with objective, “best practices” feedback that is challenging for experienced anesthesiologists.
